Berni Hurst – Artist Statement
PROFILE
Since childhood, I have always been interested in art and have only just recently had the opportunity to rekindle my passion for painting. My art is motivated by my environment. I am constantly inspired by the beauty that surrounds us particularly the Australian Bush and Outback.
Having lived for many years in the outback in Western Australia and Central Australia, my work is inspired by the beauty and colours of the ancient outback landscape. The empty riverbeds, river gums and mountain ranges and colours of Central Australia heavily influence my work. . I try to convey the rhythms of the landscape, the rolling hills, shapes and forms.
The local environment of Northeast Victoria is also an inspiration for my work and influenced by the high country, autumn and summer colours.
I am mainly self-taught and my favourite medium is acrylic paint. I enjoy the lusciousness of the paint and ability to be able to build up layers of colour. I start with a reference from my travels, usually a photo. The aim is not to recreate the scene but use it as a starting point and the painting evolves from there. My emotions at the time of creating the painting are expressed by way of use of colours, brushstrokes and techniques.
